Design Things

Updated: May 24, 2020

This fall I am going to be designing my own home and finding different themes and ideas to incorporate into it. Some of the things in this post I won't be able to do where I'm going to be living but its fun to dream anyway. I've always loved looking at houses and finding my inner Joanna Gaines. I used to love looking at the houses that were big and expensive but now I can appreciate how far small and good quality things go. Designing a home doesn't need to be expensive, just thoughtful; finding a space and putting something there that holds meaning and purpose, something that makes it home.

We have a lot of Finnish home design magazines that I love to look at and get ideas from, especially because the designs in them are often different from the styles we have in the U.S. The only problem is that they are written in Finnish but my dad can translate for me. My next hobby might be learning how to read them.

The following pictures I found on Pinterest and on different websites that are linked below them. :)

Open fireplaces

I love open concepts so fireplaces not in a wall but in the middle of space can define the two separate spaces without closing them off. It can be the distinguishing piece between the kitchen and the living room.

Rock and concrete backsplash

This concrete is from the flour mill that Joanna Gaines is doing her cooking show from. The mixture of old and new make for a perfect match. I know a lot of modern homes today are about smooth lines and surfaces but this brings some roughness to the texture and gives the feeling of warmth and something not so perfect - In a good way.

Breakfast Tables and Nooks

These little areas are perfect for morning meals and afternoon coffee. It's a dining room that isn't quite so serious.

Scandinavian: Light and Simple

Scandinavian design is probably my most favorite style. It is a combination of light colors, wood, and simplicity. A common theme I see among this design is open shelving and straight lines. In a place where it is often so dark in the winters, homes have a light and happy feeling as you walk in. Fresh is the best word I have for this type of design.

Linen Table Cloths

Linen table cloths make me feel like summer. I've always had a thing for linen. Whenever I see a linen dress, I want to buy it. But then I remember that all of my linen dresses get wrinkly after I sit and you can see through them. But with a table cloth... It's okay that it's wrinkly. It adds to the texture, and it's okay that you can sometimes see through it because tables don't need underwear.

Favorite Color Schemes

Burnt Orange and Blue Stripes:

Dark Brown and Tan:

Pinks and Yellows:

Reading Spots

A designated spot to read. These just look so comfy. I can imagine myself sitting here with a cup of coffee and a good book, then 10 minutes in, scrolling through instagram (a habit of mine I'm trying to break).
